IT'S ALL ABOUT THE CHILDREN
"There is no better way to celebrate 20 years of giving to our communities than by operating at a grassroots level: helping children learn."
Isaac Perry, HV MLK Day Founder
The HV MLK Day volunteers believe that in order for young people to learn to advocate for themselves and for their communities (just as we do) they must first gain literacy skills through repeated exposure to high-interest reading material. The more a child reads and learns about the world, the more likely that child is to recognize the power of literacy skills and become an advocate for the betterment of their community.

There are few methods more effective to promote intense, critical thinking than reading books and Dr. King himself said, "“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character–that is the goal of true education.”

How the HV MLK Day Children's Book Mission Works:
-
The HV MLK Day Children's Book Mission will connect with up to ten (10) teachers, some in Michigan's struggling school districts, who are interested in building classroom libraries. (To participate complete the "teacher survey" below).
-
Our volunteers will work with teachers to create wish lists of up to thirty (30) book titles that meet the needs of their students.
-
The wish lists will then be publish on 2 Dandelions Book Shop's website so our supporters can select and donate to a specific classroom and select whichever books they choose. (This is not a fundraiser. It is a charitable endeavor; books are at list price.)
-
Alternately, for those who wish to make a monetary donation, the HV MLK Day Committee will purchase books, on a donor's behalf, to fulfill a teacher's wish list.

Please join us in our celebration of 20 years by supporting our efforts in helping schools help children. This is a great opportunity to give as we all can so easily make a meaningful difference in the life of a child by donating just one book.

We can do this! We can't wait to see the difference our donors and supporters will make in a child's life.
